Patchcords

  • Plastic or stainless steel jackets
  • SMA, ST, FC connectors

Example of patchcord with stainless steel jacket Stainless steel jacket with SMA connectors

Choice of jacket and connector depends on the fiber to be used and the application.

Connectors

Telecom type fibers and many sensor fibers, (singlemode, graded index, high birefringence, low birefringence) have a cladding diameter of 125 µm. For this diameter of fiber there is a wide choice of connectors available such as ST, FCPC, SMA etc.

For large core fibers of the HPSUV and HPSIR type, or chalcogenide types, there is a very limited choice of connectors. For these types of fiber we recommend SMA 905 connectors as they are the only type available with a range of suitable hole sizes for these types of fibers.
Jacket for smaller fibers Jacket for medium or large core fibers
Plastic Type A Plastic Type B

Stainless steel jacket is suitable for most types of fiber. It offers the maximum fiber protection and the highest temperature range. It can be used with fibers of all diameters up to the largest silica-silica types. The outside diameter is 5 mm.

The type A plastic is a low smoke thick walled plastic, reinforced with Kevlar strands in the jacket walls. This gives excellent strength coupled with good crush resistance. It is recommended for the larger core silica-silica fibers. Outer diameter of jacket is 5 mm. Maximum temperature 100°C.

The type B plastic jacket has an inner plastic tube surrounded by Kevlar strands and an outer low smoke zero halogen jacket. It is recommended for smaller diameter silica fibers up to 1.0 mm coating diameter. Outer diameter of jacket is 3 mm. Maximum temperature 100°C.
